The Waratah Football Club Launches Alexander Aurrichio Academy for Exceptional Juniors

In honour of the late Alexander “Rooch” Aurrichio, the Waratah Football Club have established an elite Academy for exceptional junior athletes of the club.

It is with great pleasure and pride that the Waratah Football Club announces the establishment of the ‘Waratah Alexander Aurrichio Academy’ (WAAA). The mission of the WAAA is to recruit, develop, foster and retain junior footballers who strive to live by the values exemplified by ‘Rooch’ during his life – passion, commitment and resilience.

Junior players in the U12 to U18 bracket who have displayed exceptional performance and an attitude aligned with the values of the Academy, have been nominated by their coaches to participate. The program, which offers special skills training and workshops, is proudly funded by the Aurrichio family, the Waratah Football Club and its corporate partners.

The Academy was launched with an impassioned message from Alexander’s father, Lou Aurrichio: “The Aurrichio family is very proud and excited to announce the kick off the Academy… It is looked upon with great anticipation as part of the legacy of our son. Alexander stood for three key elements in both sport and life.

  • Commitment: to rise above all obstacles and train hard to be your best, both on and off the field.
  • Determination: to fully prepare yourself every day, to be better than your best and will yourself to win.
  • And passion: to love this game, after all passion is one’s greatest asset.

These are the values that Alexander trained with, played with and how he lived his life.”
“Our family feels very fortunate to have had Alexander be part of the Waratah organisation and the Northern Territory community. We now have the opportunity to see young players mature with his commitment, determination and passion for the game.”

Waratah Football Club President, Rohan Langworthy, said of the program “We are proud to be launching this program which will honour ‘Rooch’ and carry on his spirit here in the club for years to come. Waratah FC welcomes Junior players. Juniors are the future of the club and we are committed to investing in them both on and off the field. We’d like to thank the Aurrichio family and everyone who has worked so hard to make this a reality, including our Junior Development Manager, Bailey Zobel.”

Waratah Football Club Manager of Junior Development, Bailey Zobel, said of the program “The WAAA has been launched with the endeavour to provide our junior footballers with an opportunity to further develop their game and accelerate their progression into premier league, NT Thunder Academies or even the AFL. The WAAA will include targeted training of fundamental skills and high targeted performance workshop (goal-setting, fitness testing, nutrition, injury prevention/rehabilitation and leadership). The WAAA will also include mentoring of academy members by senior players within the club and academy advocates such as Mason Cox and Geva Mentor. Mentors will share their journey and provide valuable insight into what it takes to be a professional athlete. It is with great pride that we launch this academy in memory of Alexander Aurrichio. We know his legacy will help drive the development of our juniors not only as footballers, but as quality members of society.”
